Job Summary: The University of Alabama System Office in Tuscaloosa is receiving applications for the IT Technical Specialist position. Reporting to the Coordinator of Information Systems, the IT Technical Specialist maintains vendor-supplied software systems of moderate to high levels of complexity and serves as the primary technical support person for software systems to include installation, training, implementation, upgrades, interfaces, and overall maintenance. The IT Technical Specialist performs basic professional IT assignments, including end-user desktop support, and oversight of inventory control and replacement/upgrade plan for computers and related equipment.


  • Requirements include: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years related IT experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of programming, networking, software systems, multimedia, project management, and professional application of IT principles, practices and techniques in keeping with industry standards
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reporting tools and standard software applications
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze needs, research software solutions, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and react and respond effectively and appropriately in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively

Preferences include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in MIS or closely related field
  • More than two years of related IT experience
  • IT experience in higher education
  • Knowledge of software solutions for human resources, payroll and accounting, finance and investments

Specific responsibilities include: Maintain vendor-supplied software systems of moderate to high levels of complexity. Serve as the primary technical support person for such software systems to include installations, implementations, upgrades, interfaces, and overall maintenance. Assists with researching and recommending software solutions to support the administrative function of the UA System Office, including Human Resources management, Payroll and Accounting, Finance, and Investments. Maintains relative knowledge of information systems, including changing trends and market information.


Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and direct System Office toward desired technology strategies to ensure that IT process automation and support needs are being met. Develop and provide training on IT best practices, new software applications, innovative technology, etc.  Create and maintain end user training materials, e.g. video tutorials, how to’s, and end user guides.


Perform standard desktop support services including but not limited to PC and peripheral device installation set-up and configuration, operating system and software installations, basic system configuration setup, user problem resolution, basic user consultation services in accordance with policies and procedures, eradication of computer viruses, and identification of system problems requiring escalation. Escalate or engage campus IT involvement for all issues requiring expertise beyond the basic services level.
