Job Summary: The University of Alabama System is receiving applications for the position of University Counsel. This position will be based in Huntsville on the campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).
Reporting to the Chief University Counsel, the University Counsel provides legal advice and services to the administration, faculty, and staff at UAH, and prepares, reviews and recommends institutional policies, procedures, guidelines and other documents as needed.


REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited institution;
• License to practice law in the State of Alabama;
• A minimum of seven years of professional legal experience practicing law;
• Demonstrated success in effectively serving a broad, diverse and demanding clientele;
• Personal and professional integrity;
• Excellent judgment and legal skills;
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the department and across the University and the System; and
• Ability to be sensitive to and understands the special nature of working in an academic institution where the need for a collaborative working style, flexibility, adaptability, and patience are critical to success.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Prior experience with legal issues in a public education environment; and
• Experience managing complex legal issues.


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING
• Provides legal advice on a wide range of practice areas spanning all of higher education law including governmental regulatory matters, contracting, international initiatives, information technology, environmental health and safety, labor and employment, employee benefits, and sponsored research;
• Engages in active litigation, as well as, supervision of outside counsel hired in some circumstances;
• Negotiates, drafts, and reviews transactional documents;
• Facilitates a work environment that encourages communication, cooperation, and appropriate collaboration;
• Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training or courses as directed;
• Contributes to the overall success of the University; and
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
