Job Summary: The University of Alabama System is receiving applications for the position of General Counsel-UAB Medicine. This position will be based in Birmingham on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Reporting directly to the UAB Chief University Counsel, who reports to the General Counsel of The University of Alabama System, this position is responsible for providing legal advice to UAB Medicine, its hospitals and clinics, as well as its affiliates.



REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong academic credentials, including a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited institution;
• License to practice law in the State of Alabama;
• A minimum of 15+ years of corporate and transactional experience;
• Substantial experience in representing health care entities;
• Demonstrated success in effectively serving a broad, diverse, and demanding clientele, including officers and directors;
• Personal and professional integrity;
• Excellent judgment and legal skills, including legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills; and
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the department and across UAB, UAB Medicine, and The University of Alabama System



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience managing complex legal issues;
• Experience managing a team of lawyers and professional staff; and
• Effective membership of a strategic leadership team.



RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING
• Works closely with and advises a hospital, health system, medical staff and/or an academic medical center on a wide range of issues, including advising on complex business transactions and regulatory matters;
• Attends board meetings and provides legal advice and counsel to such boards;
• Negotiates, drafts, and reviews transactional documents;
• Manages, leads, and effectively collaborates with a team of attorneys and professional support staff;
• Facilitates a work environment that encourages communication, cooperation, and appropriate collaboration;
• Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training or courses as directed;
• Contributes to the overall success of UAB Medicine; and
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
