Job Summary: The Director of Research Ethics and Compliance ensures compliance with federal, state, and University regulatory requirements related to research activities involving human subjects, animal welfare, and biological safety, and supervises the Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects (IRB).


Additional Department Summary: Provides leadership and collaboration in maintaining a compliance infrastructure for research ethics, compliance, and integrity; develops and implements effective educational programs to enhance understanding of working with human subjects, animal subjects, biological safety, and the responsible conduct of research; and performs related collaborative work as required with other University units.

Ensures the provision of training and consultative services provided to Office staff, faculty, and research staff, as well as providing training and educational opportunities for the IRB, IACUC, and Biosafety committees. Facilitates the interpretation and implementation of administrative agency regulations, research policy, and standard operating procedures to staff and stakeholders.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of research compliance experience; OR master's degree and six (6) years of research compliance experience.


Skills and Knowledge: Expert knowledge of federal rules and regulations regarding human subject protections in a higher education setting. Experience as a principal investigator as well as conducting investigations into allegations of non-compliance in research. Experience conducting training or educational workshops in an academic setting or a related field. Computing proficiency, including the ability to create and manage databases. Expert knowledge and understanding of the regulatory requirements in academic research. Ability to expertly review research IRB protocols in a research compliance office. Knowledge of relevant regulations in clinical and behavioral research methodology and terminology.

Knowledge and experience with investigations, writing, analyzing, auditing, assessing compliance policies, practices, functions, and operations related to sponsored research. Ability to resolve complex problems and issues in a timely and collaborative manner. Knowledge and understanding of institutional policies and procedures in the regulatory environment within which they operate. Interpersonal skills in developing innovative strategies for positive, effective engagement with research staff, academic leadership, faculty, community leadership, and funding agencies. Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.

Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects in a research compliance office. Foster a cooperative work environment in a research compliance office. Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups in a university setting.


Preferred Qualifications: PhD, JD, or master's degree in a healthcare field and eight years of demonstrated professional growth in higher education research compliance programs. IRB experience and Research Integrity Officer experience.
