Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.


Additional Department Summary: The Socio-Agroclimatology (NSF Growing Convergence Research #2317819) project invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Geography & the Environment at the University of Alabama. Candidates will have interests in research areas of agrifood systems transformation, social processes of innovation diffusion, coupled Earth and social system modeling, and/or climate change adaptation. The position will start in the summer/fall semester of 2026 under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Magliocca.

The successful candidate will join the interdisciplinary Human-Environment Interactions Modeling & Analysis (HEIMA) Lab, and will be supported by full tuition waiver, health benefits, and a competitive 12-month salary. As a postdoctoral fellow, annual professional development funds will be available in addition to grant funds to support technical trainings, travel to professional meetings, and/or research supplies. Opportunities will also be available to contribute to the activities of the U.S. Nodal Office of the Global Land Programme, which serves as a regional node and catalyst for land system science and agrifood systems transformation in the Southeast U.S.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate. Additional qualifications based on assignment.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, Public Policy, Information Science, or closely-related discipline.


Skills and Knowledge: (Co-)authoring peer-reviewed publications and desire to publish in the future. Presenting research findings at professional conferences and meetings. Written and oral communication skills appropriate to career stage.


Preferred Qualifications: Social science survey and/or interview methods (e.g., field interviews, focus groups, online survey design). Proficiency with programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Matlab) for data management and analysis, computational social science, and/or machine learning applications. Acquisition, processing, and analysis of remote sensing imagery. Proficiency with GIS methods, applications, and visualization. Prior experience engaging with stakeholders and application of participatory methodologies.
