Officers who are currently APOST certified will be exempt from the PT and BAT/ACT WorkKeys exam. Applicants who have a lapsed APOST or POST from another state will be required to participate in only the agility portion of the PT. Job Summary: The Police Officer Trainee II completes UAPD in-house orientation and APOST Academy and Phases required to become a Police Officer.


Additional Department Summary: Drives a University vehicle as needed.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire. Must meet all eligibility requirements established by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training (APOST) Commission, including citizenship requirements and, if applicable, honorable military discharge standards. Must possess a valid certificate verifying successful completion of the APOST Commission's academy and have less than two (2) years of sworn law enforcement experience; OR be a law enforcement officer commissioned in another state with certification that is valid and in good standing and have at least one (1) year of continuous full-time law enforcement experience following certification; OR possess qualifying federal law enforcement or U.S. Military Police experience that meets lateral entry equivalency requirements in accordance with APOST administrative code. Applicants with current APOST certification must authorize release for RADIUS review. Most possess a valid U.S. driver's license and maintain and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report in compliance with University policies. Post-Offer Requirements: Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen and physical examination, and must successfully complete a psychological evaluation resulting in a satisfactory determination of psychological fitness for duty in accordance with applicable federal and state law. Post-Hire Requirements: Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background check conducted in compliance with applicable law. Successful completion of the recruit orientation training. If required, successful completion of the APOST Commission’s lateral or refresher academy within six (6) months of being sworn in as a UAPD officer. Successful completion of the University of Alabama Police Department’s Field Training and Evaluation Program. Upon completion of training requirements, the position is subject to a 1,040-hour probationary period of solo field assignment duty.


Skills and Knowledge: Must be able to perform foot patrol and work outside in all weather conditions. Ability to learn and utilize computer software designed for law enforcement. High level of attention to detail. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to use good judgement and make effective decisions. Ability to demonstrate courage and take responsibility. Ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict.


Preferred Qualifications: Current APOST certification. Bachelor's degree or higher. Foreign language skills. Experience working in a community-oriented policing environment with an emphasis on service in a higher education environment/community.
