Job Summary: The University of Alabama System is receiving applications for the position of University Counsel.  This position will be based in Tuscaloosa on the campus of The University of Alabama (UA).

Reporting to the Chief University Counsel, the University Counsel provides legal advice and services to the administration, faculty, and staff at UA, and prepares, reviews and recommends institutional policies, procedures, guidelines and other documents as needed.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong academic credentials, including a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited institution;
  • License to practice law in the State of Alabama or eligible for admission by reciprocity;
  • Demonstrated success in effectively serving a broad, diverse and demanding clientele;
  • Capacity to quickly develop expertise on issues and areas relevant to higher education;
  • Personal and professional integrity;
  • Excellent judgment and legal skills, including legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills; 
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the department and across the University and the System; and
  • Ability to be sensitive to and understands the special nature of working in an academic institution where the need for a collaborative working style, flexibility, adaptability, and patience are critical to success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of professional legal experience practicing law;
  • Prior experience with legal issues in a public education environment; and
  • Experience managing complex legal issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides legal advice on and engages in a wide range of practice areas spanning all of higher education law including, but not limited to, litigation, regulatory compliance, business transactions, and employment matters;
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages communication, cooperation, and appropriate collaboration;
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training or courses as directed;
  • Contributes to the overall success of the University; and
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
